A Good Word Wednesday #66 Choose
A little bit of goodness, encouragement and hope in your mailbox today
Good Word of the Day: Choose
Thank you for choosing to click and read these words today. As you are reading right now, think back on the day you are in. How many choices have you made? Even if it is early in your day, you’ve already made some choices. Have they been good ones? Or have you made some you wish you could change?
Such as, did you choose a healthy breakfast? Choose to go for a walk? Did you exchange words with your spouse or children that you would choose to take back if you could? So. Many. Choices.
What if we made these choices on purpose?
Choose to live in the moment and not worry about tomorrow.
Choose to put your phone down, go outside and enjoy creation.
Choose to let go of trying to control all the things and people around you.
Choose to see people with the eyes of Christ.
Last Sunday, we had a guest preacher and part of his sermon dealt with how Jesus chose to see unseen people and meet them at the point of their needs. Please read Matthew 9:35-38 for context. We can choose to see the potential of people instead of seeing them as a problem. We can choose to switch our thinking about how we see people.
Before the worship service time, my Sunday School class discussed together Romans 7:14-25. This is the section of the chapter where Paul gets real with us. He is bearing his soul that he struggles with sin. He knew what was right, but often he chose what was wrong. Over and over again. It left him feeling wretched. What a good word. How often do our choices leave us feeling wretched? Only by the grace of God does he allow us to choose Him. We can choose to live in a way that sin doesn’t control us. We can choose to let God’s Spirit transform our lives and relationships.
Wednesday in the Word
“But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 NASB
“5 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate…Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Roman 7:14-25)

The following excerpt is from a story that will be included in my upcoming book, Unseen People: Sharing Light and Life with Your Neighbors and the Nations. This piece explores the choices we make at life’s crossroads. Click the blue link below to see the progress of the book.
Pause with me at the crossroads. Are these questions you’ve asked on your journey before?
What if I took the wrong path? Will it still make a difference?
What if I’m in the wrong wood?
What if none of it really matters anyway?

A Final Good Word
One of the devotional books I read each morning is Jesus Every Day, referenced above. A few days ago, the author wrote a prayer thanking Jesus for the truth of Romans 13:14 and to help her make this choice: “Cloth yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.”
The writer prays, “It’s a decision I make to think about You, to reorient my thoughts until they circumnavigate You… So today, I choose You. I actively place my mind on how great You are. Wherever I go, whether I’m walking or driving, exercising or sitting still, working or resting—I will keep my thoughts centered on your goodness. Because when it’s there, my mind won’t have room for destructive, sinful thoughts. And for that, I’m grateful. Amen.”
That’s my prayer for you too, my friend. And for me. Let’s choose Him today.
Whatever choices come my way this week, I am committed to doing this…
“And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever.” Isaiah 30:8
