Good Word of the Day: Enough
Just one more.
One more piece of Halloween candy.
One more new outfit. (Or in my case, one more pair of shoes.)
One more vacation.
One more hour to work.
Is it ever enough? Are we ever satisfied with our family? Our job? Our home? Our church?
When do we know we’ve had enough? The United States is the land of plenty. Most of us have enough food, water and shelter. And most of us have enough stuff. What more do we need?
This trait of human nature to always desire more goes back to the beginning, to the Garden of Eden. God told Adam and Eve they could have everything in the garden, except one. And what did they want? Exactly. One more thing. The forbidden thing. What they had wasn’t enough.
We are entering the season of plenty. Plenty of Halloween candy. Plenty of yummy comfort food at Thanksgiving. Plenty of gifts under the Christmas tree.
I’m keenly aware not everyone has enough. And in this season of plenty, I challenge all of us to see those unseen people and meet them at the point of their need. Many do need nutritious food, a warm home, a place to belong. Let’s be the people that not only supply basic needs but also give someone lonely our time and listening ear; give someone hungry a place at our table and a plate heaping with good food; to give those without Christ, a way to find Him.
What more do we really need? When we have a relationship with the God of the Universe, we know He sees us, cares for us and supplies our needs.
I wish I had all the answers on how how to live a satisfied life. To know how to be content with what I already have. How do you do that? What practical advice do you have to know that you have enough?
Wednesday in the Word
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
“So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey.” Exodus 3:8
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Matthew 6:25-27 NIV

Good Questions of the Week: What do you do when you find yourself wanting more than you need? How can we use what we have to help others that don’t have enough?

It’s the question my little boy asked me often. That little boy is soon to be a 32-year-old man. But it’s still a legitimate question. And one I often ask myself.
Am I worrying about what the future holds?
Am I worrying if my new business will take off?
Am I worrying about what kind of country my grandchildren are growing up in?
Yes. Yes. And Yes. Plus yes to many more questions like this.
But I know I’m not alone. I have a feeling you are worrying too.

A Final Good Word
Make sure you hear my heart on this. Stuff, money, work… they are not bad. It’s how we use them and our attitude toward them that is at question here. It’s our gratitude toward the Giver of Life that is important. How do we develop a heart of thankfulness?
One simple thing to do is to write down three specific things you are thankful for today. Jot them down in your journal, or notes app, or notepad. Today, my list would include:
My family.
My church family.
My warm, comfortable home.
Of course, at the top of the list, is always my relationship with Christ. Without Him, nothing else matters.
What’s on your top three list today?
If I could add a #4 to the above list, it would be my work.
It is these good words that connect me with you. For that I am profoundly grateful. Every day, I am committed to doing this…
“And now, go, write it before them on a tablet and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come as a witness forever.” Isaiah 30:8
