Good Word of the Day: Gentle
We live in an ever-changing world described as volatile, angry, greedy, power-hungry. Not words you want to describe yourself.
Contrast those words to some Jesus used to describe himself: gentle and humble (Matthew 11:29). Just saying those words brings a sense of peace.
I love the depictions of Jesus with children and with sheep.
I see Him as tender, caring, gentle.
I think of the time Jesus humbled Himself, like a servant, and washed the feet of His disciples. It doesn’t mean Jesus didn’t use a forceful voice when needed, or correct His followers as He often did. Gentle doesn’t mean weak. It can mean strength under control.
It means using our voice in a gentle way to calm a tense moment. When you were a child, did your parents ever speak to you in a tender voice when you were out of control? Sometimes gentleness gets more attention than loud forcefulness. What do you love about people who are gentle in nature?
Wednesday in the Word
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:5-7

Good Unseen People
The following excerpt, from a story I wrote a few years ago, shares a moment that made me reconsider gentleness through the eyes of my big lovable Lab.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes, my computer makes me yell at it. I was sitting in my home office on a normal Tuesday afternoon doing some work at my desktop. And for some dumb reason, my computer kept making the same mistake multiple times. Surely it wasn’t user error. … so it had to be the computer making the same typos repeatedly… couldn’t be me. So, I did what I had to do and raised my voice, ever so slightly so the computer could hear the agitation in my voice and correct it’s unruly ways. .. Daisy, my three-year old trained therapy dog immediately sensed something was wrong and came to my rescue. She came to me to see if I was o.k. But she did more than that. She brought a gift. Daisy brought one of her stuffed toys, sat it at my feet by my office chair, and then laid down next to me and the toy. She stayed until I didn’t make anymore loud noises. Then she took her toy and left.

A Final Good Word
Mother’s Day is this Sunday. I wish all Moms reading these words, the happiest day. I hope you are surrounded by your children and all those you love. I always miss my sweet gentle Momma especially on this day. If you do have your mother still living in your life, please don’t take her for granted. Let her know you love her.
My prayer for all of us is to share the fruit of the Spirit this week with those who need a big helping of all the following, including gentleness:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23
Thank you for reading these words. I’m deeply honored to share this time with you each week.
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you. Jeremiah 30:2
Gratefully yours,
I love the strength under control definition for gentle. Reminds me of meekness as welll. I also think of a good counsellor who quells fears with soothing words and tones.
I like the description of strength under control. Also the picture of a gentle parent calming down better than an angry one. Just a touch of the hand, a soft voice, or a knowing look can calm us. Angry voices only get me more riled up. Thank you for this.
